I felt the same way.  I believed feeling shame, inadequacy, and insecurity was what I deserved.  I believed I would always need other people’s approval to feel like I mattered and was lovable.

I was wrong. Very wrong. Here’s why:

I tried for over twenty years to build self-worth and “be myself”.  I failed over and over and over until I discovered three specific things were keeping me stuck in a deep ocean of shame:

  • I was stuck in a futile loop of building my self-esteem only for it to collapse when mistakes or failure happened.  I call this the “Worthiness Trap”
  • I was chasing my worth because I believed it was defined by the reactions other people gave me
  • I was trying to earn worth based on the narcissistic claim that worth can be earned
 My daily life was riddled with anxiety about being rejected and shame about existing.
 
This was all I knew how to be.  It was how I lived.
 
It was scary, lonely, and daunting to try to heal and “become healthy” (much less be happy!)
 
But as I started to see small changes in myself, I also started seeing patterns of what worked and what didn’t…

OUTCOME ONE: FEEL SAFE PHYSICALLY, EMOTIONALLY, AND RELATIONALLY

The nausea, the pounding heart, the sense of panic and distress, the gutting sensation – these are all results of what I call “attachment distress”. 

This distress results from having your sense of connection and access to the other person threatened or actually severed.

This leaves you feeling shattered, lost, emptied, and frozen.
